Pain and Palliative care
Palliative care in cancer supplements the patient’s current care regimen by focusing on their and the family’s quality of life. The patient assessment in palliative care includes physical, psychosocial and spiritual domains. The common symptom associated with late stage cancer includes pain, and palliative care focuses on relieving the same.
The Specialist and his team provide therapeutics, including physhological and social support, counseling services, spiritual guidance, financial advice and support in bereavement. Both pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods are used to ease the distressing symptoms, and channels of communication supports the decision making for the patient and his/her family. The components of palliative care will improve the well-being of the patient and family/caregivers.
Depending on the stage of cancer and prognosis, palliative care can also be provided along with curative treatment, and could be initiated at any stage of the cancer care continuum.
Improving quality of life
Palliative Cancer Care
Emotional trauma due to cancer is even more painful than cancer itself. To give the best quality of life for patients and their caretakers throughout their illness, Palliative care is introduced. Control of pain and other symptoms is of great importance, and rather equally important as emotional and practical support.
Based on the needs of the patient Palliative care is provided. Patients can choose palliative care at any age and any stage, and it can be provided even along with the curative treatment.
We see the person beyond the disease. It is a paradigm shift in healthcare delivery in improving quality of life and lowering the burden of symptoms, which are the two main aims of the palliative unit.
Some symptoms which can be addressed by palliative care include:
- Pain
- Depression
- Constipation
- Anxiety
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Breathing difficulty
- Disturbed sleep
The palliative care team at Sammprada believes in extending timely support to patients with late stage cancer and their family in distress including the caregivers, which in-turn enables addressing the challenges. These include improved symptom management, enable the stakeholders in understanding the prognosis and outcomes of care, and assist the process of planning further care as the disease progress.
Our aim is to provide dignity to patients in their last league of the battle with cancer.
