Bone Marrow Transplant
- Autologous (self-transplant)
- Allogeneic (donor transplant)
- Haplo identical transplantation
- Mini-transplantation
- Bloodless transfusion
The blood cells may be sourced either from the blood or bone marrow. There are two types of BMTs:
. The blood cells may be sourced either from the blood or bone marrow. There are two types of BMTs:
Autologous transplant
Here the patient’s blood cells are collected and stored before initiation of high-dose chemotherapy. Post-treatment these cells are transfused back to the same person. This type of transplant is a rescue operation, as high doses of chemotherapy or radiation are known to damage the bone marrow beyond its regenerative capacity. Such re-transfused blood cells tend to repair the damaged bone marrow.
Allogeneic transplant
In this scenario, blood cells are collected from a donor. This donor may be a member of the family like a sibling or someone unrelated. In this type of transplant, the bone marrow is replaced with healthy marrow from another person whose HLA typing matches ≥ 50% when compared with the patient.
